Role of Cardiothoracic POCUS in respiratory distress
Evaluating a dog or cat in respiratory distress is extremely challenging. The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a low stress tool that can provide valuable information in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients in respiratory distress, especially in the emergency and critical care setting. This lecture will outline when, why and how to implement cardiothoracic POCUS. We will review key pathologic POCUS findings of the heart, lungs and pleural space and their clinical associations in dogs and cats in respiratory distress.

Adoption is Just One Option: Understanding Sources of Dogs and the Dog Marketplace
Adoption is widely viewed as the most ethical way to obtain a dog, yet the literature shows that owners value choice. This presentation reviews recent pet demographic data, highlighting how many dogs are owned in the U.S., how many households have multiple dogs, and where many pet owners obtain their dogs. We will also look at what the literature estimates for annual "dog demand". A key challenge is the lack of mandatory federal reporting by shelters and rescues, leaving voluntary data to fill the gap. Current adoption numbers fall short of meeting demand, creating space for breeders to supply dogs—particularly puppies, small/toy breeds, and less common breeds rarely available in shelters. While commercial breeding carries negative perceptions, a grassroots movement is advancing ethical, sustainable breeding practices. Together, these trends shape the evolving dog marketplace and the need for balanced, responsible approaches to meeting the nation’s demand for companion animals.

FIP: Evolution of Treatment and Current Recommendations
For decades, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was considered a devastating and uniformly fatal diagnosis. Veterinary students today, however, are entering the field at a remarkable moment: within just a few years, FIP has transformed from a heartbreaking disease to one with highly effective treatment options. In this lecture, we will begin by examining the pathogenesis of FIP and the wide spectrum of clinical manifestations that make this disease both fascinating and frustrating to diagnose. From there, we will trace the extraordinary journey of treatment—from groundbreaking discovery of successful antiviral treatments, to the rise of grassroots, owner-driven social media networks distributing unlicensed therapies, and ultimately to the emergence of legally compounded medications. Current recommended drugs, their dosing strategies, and practical monitoring approaches will be reviewed. Finally, we will explore how cats surviving long-term with FIP are teaching us new lessons about this disease, including unusual associations and sequelae that are only now being appreciated.

How an ordinary clinician can make an extraordinary discovery - the story of Tritrichomonas foetus
We all want to have a lasting impact on our profession. We often think of the big discoveries as out of our reach; that they are only attainable by more seasoned, schooled, or qualified individuals. Our ability to make wide-reaching impacts is oftentimes less about abilities and credentials and more about determination. This lecture will share a real-life, behind-the-scenes, unredacted story of how a new infectious cause of diarrhea in cats was discovered. It starts with a single cat met on a single day and extends to global recognition of the infection as a cause of diarrhea in cats worldwide. It is a story about discovery of the protozoal pathogen Tritrichomonas foetus/blagburni. It is a tale of curiosity, incredulity, persistence, and collaboration. Its purpose is to share an example of how anyone in our profession, not just the card-carrying academicians, can achieve a next big discovery, and to help inspire a next generation of veterinarian clinician scientists.

Colic in a Dish: Advances in Modeling Equine Intestinal Disease outside the Horse
Despite decades of research and clinical advances, colic continues to be the leading emergent cause of death for horses. Insufficient disease modeling is one contributor to this lack of significant progress. This lecture will review recent advances in colic modeling using in vitro and ex vivo platforms including three dimensional mini-guts, epithelial monolayers, and ex vivo intestinal perfusion. While the models discussed here are directly relevant to equine intestinal disease, many of them have the potential to be easily applied to other species and types of injury as well. This presentation may appeal to those with interests in equine medicine, gastrointestinal diseases, translational medicine, or research.

Understanding Burnout
At a time when the term "burnout" can be used to refer to almost everything, it can be difficult to understand what it actually means. Thankfully, there is a large body of research that can shed light on the drivers, signs, impacts, and characteristics of this occupational phenomenon.
Because burnout was first defined in medical professionals, it is particularly important that veterinarians be knowledgeable about what elements of workplace culture and professional norms contribute to burnout. Indeed, only by understanding burnout can we reduce its impacts on our professional communities and workplaces. Additionally, it is important that we understand how burnout, an occupational phenomenon, can lead to physical and mental illness in those who experience it.
This lecture will provide an overview of the foundational literature on burnout, including the conditions that enable it and actions that veterinary professionals can take as individuals and teams to improve occupational well-being and career sustainability.

Moral Injury, Knowing What's Right, But Not Being Able To Do What's Right
The simplified definition of moral injury is knowing what's right, but not being able to do what's right. In the veterinary profession we are frequently confronted with situations that can result in moral injury. This session will explore moral injury starting with well known global examples, and then move to the moral injury experienced daily in veterinary medicine. The information will help differentiate moral injury from burnout, compassion fatigue, or post traumatic stress. These situations are related, and can be overlapping, but understanding the difference is crucial to choosing the best strategies for recognition, healing, and resilience.

Hazardous Habitats: Protecting Exotics from Everyday Toxins
Our zoological companion animal (ZCA) pets are exposed to similar hazards and toxins as their traditional pet counterparts. Many pets are allowed to free roam or encounter potential toxins both within and outside the home. Additionally, some species such as birds are more sensitive to respiratory toxins than mammals are. There are unique toxins, such as avocados in birds and fipronil in rabbits, and other toxins that are universally concerning. When discussing potential toxins, one needs to consider the exposure route, dosage ingested, anticipated clinical signs and any potential treatment. This also assumes that most owners may know what toxin their pet was exposed to, and diagnosis of all toxins is not possible. Targeted supportive care including environmental management becomes even more important in these cases. Educating owners and veterinarians regarding the unique toxins ZCA species are susceptible to, may help prevent or minimize future cases of toxicosis in these species. This lecture will focus on several common or unique toxins to ZCA species and touch on diagnosis and treatment if available

Mistakes Were Made: Working Through Medical Error
When it comes to medical mistakes among veterinarians in clinical practice, there are only those of us who have made them and those of us who will make them.
None of us went into veterinary medicine to do anything less than our best, and our best often feels like it must be perfect. Even so, medical errors will occur for a variety of reasons and with a variety of impacts during any clincial career. How we manage and learn from medical errors can have big impacts on our career satisfaction, teams, and client relationships.
This presentation will break down causes of error, with a focus on how systems and communication norms can limit or enable errors. We discuss how to talk about medical errors with clients and teams to provide closure, growth, and improved practices. Finally, we will talk about how the principles of patient safety culture can improve both patient safety and workplace well-being---a win for everyone.

Field Surgery in Small Ruminants
As small ruminants become more common in the United States as production animals and pets, both small animal and large animal veterinarians are asked to provide care for them. Their care provides an significant opportunity for growth of veterinarians as care can be provided in the field by large animal veterinarians or in traditional small animal settings. Yet surgical approaches in sheep and goats will vary from both traditional techniques in small animals and cattle.
This presentation will cover routine field surgical procedures of small ruminants. General anesthesia versus regional anesthesia, tips to maintain sterility, and step-by-step surgical descriptions will be presented. We will discuss abdominal surgery including rumenotomy and Caesarean section. Approaches to creating teaser animals for synchronization and heat detection including vasectomies and epididymectomies will be presented with advantages and disadvantages of each. Cosmetic dehorning and enucleations will be described. An emphasis on appropriate analgesia will also be provided.

Applying Clinical Pharmacology in Practice
The words 'Clinical Pharmacology' likely brings back memories of being grilled on the intricacies of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and may serve as a reminder of the benefits of a beta-blocker. This lecture will serve as a review for veterinary students that the real purpose of understanding mechanisms of action, drug interactions, and physiologic reasoning is to guide us toward what truly matters — clinical efficacy. This session will provide you with a practical framework for assessing the quality of clinical evidence, review important clinical pharmacokinetic parameters, and give attendees confidence to help improve clinical decision-making in practice.

The VCPR and "on label" and "extra label" drug use.
The presentation will cover the types of situations in which the state defined VCPR applies and when the federal VCPR applies. After defining the veterinarian client patient relationship, the presentation will introduce over the counter (OTC), prescription (Rx), and veterinary feed directive (VFD) drugs; and distinguish dosage form drugs from those approved for use in medicated feed. Approved dosage form drugs are generally marketed as over the counter or prescription drugs. Drugs approved for use in medicated feed are normally marketed as over the counter or veterinary feed directive drugs. Initiatives fostering antimicrobial stewardship have led to the transition of many medically important antimicrobials from over the counter to either prescription or veterinary feed directive marketing status. The presentation will identify drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration that fall under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act (AMDUCA). Sources of information will be provided and questions are encouraged.
